M4- Coastal Flooding

For this week's topic, we covered coastal flooding analysis. A topic that is near and dear to my heart since I was born and raised in Florida. We evaluated two types of elevation models, looked at direct storm impacts, and created our own DEMs. This week really taught the impact of symbology and really showed the control over data that we have as GIS analysts. I struggled some with the instructions on step 3, specifically with understanding the Region group tool.

M3- Visibility Analysis

In this week's lab we completed four online courses. They covered the basics of performing visibility analysis. Completing the courses left me able to complete viewsheds and Line of Sight analyses. The LOS would be very useful in my telecommunications work for choosing fixed wireless propagation towers. I also learned some tricks to help visualize the 2D data we work with using census data as the elevation variable.

M2-LiDAR

For this week's lab, we worked with LiDAR and elevation tools. I've worked with these before early in my career, but the lab took it a step further. Specifically, with the mathematical tools used to prepare the rasters for further analysis. I've only ever gotten as far as getting a difference of values to see change between storm events. The mathematical processes behind GIS have always been daunting, but these tools show me I can accomplish more than I previously believed. M1- Crime Analysis

This is my result for the local moran's I hotspot map. Following the instructions through the lab were straightforward  This is my kernel density map. It took a few tries to get right, I think I was having issues with ArcPro. But I refreshed, reconsulted the instructions, and this ended up being the map I found to be most accurate.  This is my burglaries per 1000 households map. This method seems to be a very hands-on approach to creating a hotspot map.
